Comfort Kokwe is a participant of the program's cohort 3 and cohort 4 with Evelyn Styles and Michele Henry being her mentors respectively. She is a beneficiary of our partner organization, The Akua Kuenyehia Foundation (AKF). She is in her final year at the United States International University, Kenya, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Criminal Justice. Comfort is actively progressing through her academic program and wants to pursue national service in an international relations or criminal justice organisation after graduation.
The following insights have been extracted from the transcription of an online interview, where Comfort graciously shared the transformative impact of the MDS Mentoring Program.
Comfort had to make a pivotal decision during her educational journey – choosing a minor (a secondary field of study or specialization that complements the major). "Before my first participation in the mentoring program, I didn't know what to do. I had so many options," she shared. With her mentor's advice, Comfort navigated this challenge and chose criminal justice, aligning her academic pursuits with her long-term goal of becoming a lawyer.
Comfort identified a need to enhance her networking skills. Her mentor's practical tips, such as being confident, smiling, and taking the initiative to approach others, resulted in a tangible expansion of her professional network. Moreover, the mentorship subtly improved Comfort's presentation skills, leading to unexpected achievements and milestones in her personal and professional development.
Comfort's journey through the mentoring program has not only been about aligning her aspirations but also about setting and achieving realistic goals. Her short-term goal of choosing a course aligned with her career path, criminal justice, became a stepping stone toward her long-term aspiration of pursuing law.
The mentoring program significantly contributed to Comfort's personal growth and confidence. Comfort highlighted instances such as overcoming exam anxiety, making informed decisions about her minor, and developing mindfulness as key elements of her journey. These personal victories showcase the holistic impact of mentorship on her overall well-being.
Comfort Kokwe's success story extends beyond her achievements, emphasizing her passion for inspiring and mentoring others. As a guiding force, she mentors individuals facing academic challenges, sharing her experiences to help them make informed choices. "I have two people that I'm mentoring, and before they select any course, they come to me for advice," she proudly shared. Comfort's dedication to mentoring, evident in her role guiding others within the MDS mentoring program, showcases the profound impact of support on personal and professional growth. She believes that having a mentor who understands your journey can prevent missteps and lead to the right path. Comfort's narrative embodies growth, resilience, and empowerment, highlighting the transformative potential of the MDS Mentoring Program.
